Oxford, a city in central southern England, revolves around its prestigious university, established in the 12th century. The architecture of its 38 colleges in the city’s medieval center led poet Matthew Arnold to nickname it the 'City of Dreaming Spires'. University College and Magdalen College are off the High Street, which runs from Carfax Tower (with city views) to the Botanic Garden on the River Cherwell.

Is your car due an MOT test?

Use our MOT checker tool to check when your MOT and road tax is due and set up free reminders. Bookmot.com is a free booking platform and never charges a penny from the customers, you have to pay directly at the garage when the work is done.

Our directory features thousands of MOT test centres across the country and you can search for them by postcode and your vehicle’s registration number. This will provide you with a list of garages for you to choose, visit their garage detail page and find out everything you need to know about the garages before you book an MOT.

Why is the MOT test important?

The test will check whether your car meets the road safety and environmental standards. You will be prosecuted for driving on the roads when your vehicle’s MOT has expired. The only exception to this rule is if you are driving it to a garage to be repaired or to a pre-booked MOT test. Make sure you avoid the risk of missing your test date by booking your MOT well in advance using our live booking and free MOT checker tool; the MOT cost will vary for each garage so this is a great way to save money and ensure you book at the best and nearest garage.

When the MOT is exempted?

New cars are exempted from the MOT test and it becomes mandatory every year after the vehicle is 3 years old.

How early can you have an MOT?

Your MOT certificate is valid for one year, meaning you have exactly one year from your last test until the next one is due. However, you can MOT your vehicle up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out.

How long it takes for the MOT test?

MOT tests usually take around 45-60 minutes for an average car, supposing your car is having no issues and passes the test. However, it may take longer if a repair is required and depending upon the type of repairs, you may have to wait longer.

Do I need to carry any documents for the MOT test?

Usually, documents are not required for the test, MOT centres are now able to find all the information from the DVSA database. If it's your vehicle’s first MOT test then the V5C registration certificate is required. The same applies if you have changed the registration plate since the last MOT test.

What are the most common and minor MOT failures?

Many times your vehicle fails the MOT test that is easily identifiable and can be avoided.

  • Lighting [17%] has been consistently the most common reason behind most MOT failures each year.
  • Roughly 14% of MOT fails because of tyres not having enough tread depth. Having tread depth less than 1.6mm can cause your vehicle to fail its MOT test.
  • Nearly 13% of MOT failures are due to registration plates. Highly damaged number plates at rear or front or a faulty plate light can also cause your vehicle to fail its MOT check.
  • 12% of MOT fails are due to windscreen wipers. Yes, you’ve heard it right, the wipers having visible tears and damage can cause your vehicle to fail the MOT. A chip or a crack on a windscreen which obscures the driver’s vision of the road can also lead to MOT failure

These are some of the garages who offers pre-MOT checkup service so you can avoid MOT failures due to these minor issues

What if my car fails the MOT test?

In this unfortunate event, MOT testers will issue you with a VT30 ‘Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate’. This will have your car details, MOT test number and the reasons why your vehicle fails an MOT test. VT30 is required if you need a retest or an appeal.
MOT Retest
Before carrying out the retest you have to first address all the issues listed on the certificate. Depending on the reason for the failure, there are some retest options which can save you from paying additional fees.
Appealing a failed MOT
If you feel that your car has unfairly failed its MOT and you want to appeal the decision, be sure to discuss the reasons with the testing centre first. However, if you still feel that the decision was wrong, you can fill out the complaint about an MOT and send it to DVSA within 14 days of the test date. In the meantime, do not carry out any repairs or modifications on the car, as this will cause the appeal process to be cancelled. An alternative test appointment will be arranged for your vehicle within 5 days. You’ll be required to pay the full MOT fee again. You are eligible for either full or partial refund if your appeal is successful.
